Anticipatory Grief
Delayed Grief
Anticipatory grief happens prior to an expected loss. Essentially, it refers to feelings associated with a loss that someone knows is coming. Typically, anticipatory grief is associated with impending death, however, the definition of anticipatory grief has expanded to include other major losses. For example, loss of physical mobility or independence due to illness or injury, impending job loss, a relocation or even a
breakup of a relationship (i.e., separation, divorce).
Delayed grief occurs when people postpone feelings of grief and loss to a later date due to another life event. They may tell themselves that other people's needs are more important than their own and focus on taking care of them. This is an example of them trying to avoid their own painful feelings. Sudden loss may also create feelings of shock, numbness and a conscious or unconscious inability to cope with grief immediately. Delayed grief can occur weeks, months or even years after a loss.
Complicated Grief
Cumulative Grief
Complicated grief also known as ‘complicated bereavement’, ‘chronic grief’ or ‘complicated grief disorder’ involves experiencing symptoms accompanied by an array of thoughts, feelings and behaviors that become severe in longevity and impair one's ability to function.
Cumulative grief also known as a ‘grief overload’ occurs when someone experiences multiple losses that are happening in a short period of time; or before processing an earlier grief moment. This can lead to the inability to grieve a loss before
experiencing another and/or losses occur in too rapid of succession to heal from the initial loss.
